August John Rotelle, also known as "Gus" and "Sonny," 85, of Hatfield, passed peacefully Monday, May 18, 2026. He was the husband of Cynthia (Wirsing) Rotelle, of Hatfield, and the late Joy Robertson Rotelle.
Born February 2, 1941 in Norristown, he was the son of the late August S. and Mary (Panczak) Rotelle.
Mr. Rotelle graduated from Ambler High School in 1959, earning accolades as a star football player. He then attended Villanova University until a football injury ended his dream of continuing to play.
Gus was a part of his family's food distribution business, Rotelle Inc., until 1997. He then joined his son, David, in their home-building business, D. Rotelle Builders, which later became Rotell(e) Studio, operated by his youngest son, Peter.
Gus loved fishing, spending time at the shore and the Pocono Mountains, entertaining family and friends, traveling, and riding his John Deere.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, David Rotelle (Roberta) of Honeybrook, Pamela Robertson (Thomas) of Summit, NJ, and Peter Rotelle (Oona) of Wyndmoor; his step-son, Chandler "David" Gwilliam (Molly Russ) of Ottsville; 13 grandchildren, Joy Lehman (Kyle), Hope Zimmerman (Braden), A.J. Rotelle (Jenna), Mary Kate Rotelle, Jacob Rotelle (Alisha), Meredith, William, Mimi, and Ted Robertson, Morgan and Chase Rotelle, and Lauren and Mason Gwilliam; eight great-grandchildren, Collin, Ryder and Kip Lehman, Bridger, Chanler, and Felicity Jane Zimmerman, and Everett and Nora Rotelle.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Kay Wendler.
Relatives and friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Main St., Lansdale, followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private in the church columbarium. Arrangements are by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Gus's memory to Tunnel To Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 or to Ascend Hospice, 1120 Welsh Road, Suite 220, North Wales, PA 19454.
