Gene Louise Whistler

Gene Louise Whistler, born January 5, 1942 in Chestnut Hill, PA, daughter of Brandon Whistler and Louise (Henning) Whistler, passed away at the age of 81 on Friday, August 25, 2023 at home with her family in Lansdale, PA.

Gene attended East Stroudsburg State College and earned her Masters degree at West Chester University.  She was a celebrated coach and teacher of physical education and health in the Pottstown School District until her retirement in 1996.  She had a lifelong love of sports that carried all the way from her days playing field hockey with her sister, Judy, at Springfield Township High School to playing and watching tennis throughout her life.  She mentored countless student athletes and coached teams in field hockey, basketball, and tennis.

In addition to her passion for sports, especially tennis, Gene also loved reading and art, and was an artist in her own right.  She enjoyed traveling west to New Mexico and Oregon to visit her family, and was dedicated to spending time nearly every year at the shore.  Gene was deeply connected to her community and made friends wherever she went, fostering these relationships into life-long friendships.  She was involved in her church, Gwynedd Square Presbyterian, and generously supported many causes.

Gene was predeceased by her partner, Janet Harvey, and sister, Judy Weideman.  She is survived by her brother, Ain Whistler, and by her loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.  She is remembered with love by her many friends and family.

Services will be held on September 5, 2023 at 11am at Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church, 837 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale, PA, with visitation from 10-11am and lunch to follow.  Zoom viewing of the service will be available here: https://tinyurl.com/GeneWhis.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made for the benefit of the Pottstown High School women's sports program to the Foundation for Pottstown Education, 230 Beech Street, Pottstown, PA 19464.
