Gertrud M. McKendrick, 98, passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the cherished wife of the late Joseph E. McKendrick, Sr.
Born September 30, 1928 in Darmstadt, Germany, she was a daughter to the late Georg and Helene (Bader) Eckstein.
Gertrud loved spending time in her garden, getting lost in a good book, and keeping up with current events. Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Gertrud had a way of bringing laughter and lightness to those around her. Gertrud also loved plays, musicals and listening to and kind of genres.
Above all, she will always be remembered for her big heart, for she always helped those she knew as well as strangers. Her warmth and love was contagious and spread to all around her.
As an Army wife, she embraced a life of change and adventure, moving frequently as her husband’s military career took them to new places. She adapted with grace, making each new community a home ending in Lansdale, PA.
Gertrud is survived by her children, Joseph E. McKendrick, Jr. (Kathleen) of Chalfont, Margaret Chiffens-Casagrand of Telford; her grandchildren, Caroline, Susan, Amy, Alyssa, Helena; her sister, Hedwig Stephan of Darmstadt, Germany; and six great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Avenue, Lansdale, PA 19446. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gertrud’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
