James “Jim” Albert Bergey (November 10, 1932 – June 29, 2026)

Jim Bergey, a kind and generous man, passed away at age 93 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jim was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and raised in Lansdale, PA. He served in the Air Force taking him to Alaska and New Mexico. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and pursued a Ph.D. at Yale University.

Jim and his good friends, John and Nancy Bartlit, moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1963 to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory. There he worked on one of the nation’s more important cold war programs, Project Vela, that developed satellite instrumentation to detect nuclear detonations in the upper atmosphere and outer space. After 24 years at Los Alamos, Jim moved to Albuquerque, NM to work at Sandia National Laboratories where he worked on satellite and intelligence programs of national security importance for another 15 years.

Jim enjoyed hiking, birdwatching, tennis, photography, classical music, fine dining, computers, and watching sports. He held a private pilot’s license and owned an airplane which he often flew to Pennsylvania to visit family. Though Jim never married nor had children, his friendship with John and Nancy Bartlit, and John and Joyce Wolfe, made him a family member much beloved by their respective children.

Jim is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Rose Bergey. He is survived by Bergey cousins and many friends.

Jim will be laid to rest next to his parents at Greenlawn Cemetery, Lansdale, PA in a graveside memorial service on July 16, 2026. Arrangements are by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
