John C. Winter

John C. Winter, 81, of Newark, DE, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara H. Winter, who died November 20, 2025.

Born June 7, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Ruth (Chambers) Winter.

John was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Newark, DE, where he volunteered his time extensively. Among other things, he served as an usher, helped maintain church facilities, and participated in Code Purple, a program to supply shelter and hot meals to unhoused people during the cold winter months.

He enjoyed playing tennis and fishing, watching sports (especially the Phillies and Eagles), and cheering on his three sons at all of their various endeavors. He spent long hours on the back porch with Barbara watching the birds and was the official grillmaster, groundskeeper, and pancake-maker of the family.

John trained as a mechanical engineer at West Virginia Institute of Technology. He had a long career at Dupont before becoming an independent contractor doing safety and corrosion testing for equipment in the chemical and petroleum industries. He travelled nationally and internationally for work; in his retirement, he and Barbara enjoyed trips abroad, in particular to visit historical religious sites, including Scotland and Turkey.

Survivors include his children, David L. Winter (Makiko Yasuda) of New York City, NY, John Andrew Winter (Anne Polakovic) of Newark, DE, and Joseph S. Winter (Adam Shecter) of Queens, NY; his grandchildren, Emi Winter and Hiroki Winter; brother, James Winter (Connie) of St. Albans, WV; and sister, Sarah Bishop (Terry) of Whitsett, NC.

Relatives and friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale, followed by the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn, PA.
