Kenneth John (Ken) Hiebert was born in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, on December 20, 1930, to Marie Penner and John M. Hiebert.
He was married on May 27, 1953, to Eleanor Ruth Claassen in Beatrice, Nebraska. Together, they lived in Basel, Switzerland, from 1954 to 1964, where all three of their daughters were born while Ken completed studies in design at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule.
After returning to the United States, Ken founded the Department of Graphic Design at the Philadelphia College of Art (later the University of the Arts) in1966, and became well known as a significant design educator. His professional archive is housed in the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Ken was an avid, accomplished photographer and a keen, enthusiastic observer of life. He loved music, travel, and nature. His playful sensibility and adventuresome spirit permeated every part of his life. He passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, two days shy of his 94th birthday, in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.
He is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 71 years and life partner in all things; brother Harvey; three daughters, Sara Hiebert Burch, Christine Hiebert, and Stephanie Hiebert; and son-in-law Elliot Burch. He is predeceased by his brother John.
