Devoted wife and beloved mother Lorraine Hoffman, 89, of Lansdale, passed away in the evening of May 25, 2026 at Doylestown Hospital.
Born on July 16, 1936 in Simpson, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Phyllis (Prusinski) Potson.
Family was Lorraine’s passion, and she dedicated her early years to creating a warm, welcoming home for her family. The home, first in the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia and later in Lansdale, was always a lively hub of activity. Intermingled with the wafting smells of Lorraine’s cooking (meat cakes with and without onions, breakfast for dinner with blueberry pancakes made tableside) were the voices of neighborhood kids who could sometimes finagle an invitation to dinner if handled just right. Lorraine’s love for her children extended to their friends, whom she always wanted to meet and get to know. She loved having young people in the house and their music, fashion, and slang were her fountain of youth.
In later years, the aromas would become more sophisticated. Cooking and baking were lifelong hobbies and she pushed her skills to new heights with each year. She fashioned herself into a skilled baker, making a dozen or more varieties of Christmas cookies each year and sharing them widely throughout the network of people who loved her. Her cakes were much sought-after additions to family gatherings, and you could fill multiple albums with photos of her passing her love of baking to her young children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Lorraine enjoyed the arts. She was a voracious reader. Every room of the house had a bookshelf or a stack of books, and she shared both her recommendations and the books she had finished willingly. She made frequent trips to the movies and to Philadelphia to see live theater or music. She never turned down an offer to visit a museum or historical site.
With her youngest child spending his days in elementary school, Lorraine returned to the workplace. She worked for 10 years at Burger King on Broad Street in Lansdale, followed by 20 more at Clemens Market, wrapping up her work years as a clerk and fashion consultant at Chico’s. She loved working and she loved her coworkers. Wherever she worked she brought home delightful and funny stories of the cast of characters with whom she spent her days.
Perhaps most of all, she loved her partner, soul mate, and husband Allyn. Though health issues nearly took him from her just as the story was beginning, he recovered and they went on to build a sprawling clan. They weathered the penny-pinching years of five mouths to feed, always finding a little extra for small luxuries like beautiful hand-made dresses, vacations to the mountains or the Jersey Shore, and ridiculously extravagant Christmases. Ever thrifty, Lorraine and Allyn were blessed with a life of travel in the years after their children left the nest. They would visit Germany, Austria, Mexico, Canada, Jamaica and more. They frequently vacationed with their children and grandchildren, spending many weeks at the Jersey Shore as well as making frequent excursions to San Francisco, a city that Lorraine, a foodie of the first order, never grew tired of.
Allyn passed in February of 2016, and Lorraine lost her rock. Though she never stopped mourning his death, she continued to find comfort and joy in her ever-expanding family. She died peacefully, surrounded by family on the evening of what would have been Allyn’s ninety-first birthday.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Allan “Scott” Hoffman (Deborah), Cheryl Locker (Brian), Karin Cavanaugh (Ted Scandlin), Erick Hoffman (Christina), and Adam Hoffman (Susan Williams), her 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her five siblings, Gerrie Lear, Richard Potson, Andrew Potson, David Potson, and Terry Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Friday, June 5, 2026 from 9:30 -10:30 AM at Saint Stanislaus R.C. Church, 51 Lansdale Avenue, Lansdale, PA 19446 where her Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler, PA 19002.
