Muriel J. Landauer

October 16, 1929 — June 2, 2026

Muriel J. Landauer, born Muriel Jussim, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends. She was born on October 16, 1929, in the Lower East Side of New York City to Solomon and Kate Jussim.

Muriel was a lifelong learner and educator. She earned a degree in Biology from Hunter College and later received a Master's Degree in Education from Western Reserve University. On February 26, 1950, she married the love of her life, Dr. Rolf W. Landauer, beginning a partnership that would span decades and take them around the world.

A devoted wife and mother, Muriel dedicated herself to her family, faith, and community. She taught Hebrew and religious school, was active in the PTA, and generously gave her time through her involvement with the United Jewish Appeal (UJA). An avid volunteer, she also devoted countless hours to the Briarcliff Library and her children's schools, where her commitment to education and literacy touched many lives and many books.

While she often joked about the extensive travel required by her husband's distinguished career as a world-renowned physicist, she embraced those adventures and especially treasured opportunities to visit family. No matter where life took her, she always found a way to make a detour to Ireland to spend time with her beloved and only daughter, Karyn.

Muriel's greatest joy was her family. She was a loving mother, mother-in-love, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend whose warmth, wisdom, and unwavering devotion touched countless lives. Her kindness, sense of humor, and enduring love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon and Kate Jussim; her beloved husband, Dr. Rolf W. Landauer; her sisters, Priscilla Henken and Julia Brody; and her daughter-in-law, Dr. Susan Landauer. She is survived by her brother, Jared Jussim; her children, Karyn Walsh (Terence Walsh), Dr. Carl Landauer, and Thomas Landauer (Corinne Landauer); her cherished grandchildren, Aviva Walsh, Yochanan Walsh, Michael Landauer, Alix Newkirk, and Ava Hinkle; her great-grandchild, Ade Maher; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Muriel was love. She was deeply loved. And she will continue to be loved and remembered for the rest of our days. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the lives she touched, and the countless memories she leaves behind.

The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to Muriel’s caregivers, Atiba, Laverne & Josephine who in particular became one of Muriel’s best friends. We love and thank you all for your support.

Muriel’s memory will absolutely be a blessing.
