Dick was a 1946 graduate of Hatfield High school. He was a Temple Medical school graduate and a well respected physician in the Lansdale area as a General Practitioner. He saw to the wellness of families, delivered many babies to the area, and was one of the last doctors who made house calls.
In the early 60's he went back to Temple for an anesthesia residency and then started the anesthesia department at Grandview Hospital in Sellersville. He gave anesthesia for thousands of operations and managed the growing department until he retired. After retiring, he supported Doctors without Borders by traveling to Africa several times to train anesthesiologists there in our techniques.
Dick was an accomplished musician, playing the piano, guitar and banjo. He started a Dixieland band who appeared at many social and charitable events.
He was a fierce competitor on the tennis court and played well into his senior years.
He was an outdoorsman winning many Hobie Cat sailboat races off Ocean City beaches. He taught his children how to sail and instilled in them his love of the shore. He was also an avid windsurfer and traveled the country seeking out the wind.
Dick loved to fly fish and fished many lakes, rivers, and streams in the East and saltwater in New Jersey, the Keys, Belize and Mexico. Especially the Bushkill and the dry fly fishing it had. He loved the solitude and the quiet beauty of the stream. He practiced catch and release, allowing the fish to fight again another day. One of his favorite trips was a three-day canoe trip down the Delaware River. Shooting rapids, camping in a tent and fishing for shad. Another was the annual "Happy Hookers" June and September bass fishing trips to Lake Wallenpaupack.
Dick took up skiing at age 50 and skied local mountains, New England, the Alps (17 times) and the Rockies. He enjoyed skiing with his children and went on ski vacations as well as beach vacations. He took his grandchildren skiing until he was in his late 80's. At 70, he took up golf and played weekly in a league.
He traveled the world and met many interesting people who became lifelong friends that he continued to correspond with until the day he passed. Dick was a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Family was most important in his life. We will miss him. He was a friend to all who met him.
