Walter Bula

Jan 25, 1939 — Nov 6, 2026

Walter Bula, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on November 6, with his family at his side.

Born on January 25, 1939, in Zhovkva, Ukraine, to Michael and Paranya (Luzna) Bula, he fled the war with his family in 1944. After spending several years in a Displaced Persons Camp in Niedernhart, Austria, he emigrated to New York City in 1949. Walter attended St. George School and was active in the Ukrainian community, YCK Soccer, and PLAST.

Walter graduated from Pratt Institute and later from Stevens Institute of Technology with a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Shortly thereafter, he began working for McDonnell Douglas and later Boeing Company as a field service rep. His career  spanned 30 years, including 27 years of international assignments in Italy, Pakistan, Argentina, France, and Mexico. In addition, Walter spent 16 years as an independent contractor for the CIA during the height of the Cold War.

Walter met the love of his life, Katheryna (Suchenko) Bula, at Soyuzivka in 1965. It was love at first sight. They married in 1968 at St. Georges Ukrainian Catholic Church in NYC, started a family, and embarked on their life journey and love of living overseas. Through hard work, love, and faith in each other, they fulfilled their dreams.

Walter had a witty and sharp sense of humor that will be sorely missed. He loved playing tennis - a passion he shared with his sons. He developed a strong appreciation of the fine arts, collecting pieces throughout his overseas travels. In retirement, he enjoyed his family, traveled (some more), and became an adjunct professor teaching math at the local college. Walter and Katheryna actively supported Ukrainian causes and organizations throughout the United States and around the world.

Walter is survived by his wife, Katheryna, of 58 years. In addition, he is survived by his sons and their families, Alexander and Jaime with children Brandon and Brooke; Gregory and Alexandra with children Natalia, Daniel, Lukas, Alexander; Andrej with children Laurence and Nicolas; brothers James Bula and Orest Bula; and sisters-in-law Lydia (Suchenko) Bitcover and Antoinette Suchenko. He was preceded in death by his two older brothers, John Bula and Wasyl Bula.

Visitation will be held at Saint Andrew Memorial Church, 280 Main Street, South Bound Brook, NJ, on Monday, November 9 at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery following the service. A luncheon will follow on the premises - at the Zala of Saint Andrew Memorial Church. We invite you to join us.

Arrangements are being accommodated by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale, PA.
