Alan Holmes Johnson-Mcnutt

July 10, 1986 — August 26, 2017

Alan Holmes Johnson-McNutt, 31, of Philadelphia and formerly of East Norriton, PA, died Saturday, August 26, 2017.

Born July 10, 1986 in Philadelphia, he was the beloved son of Gary S. and Debbie R. Johnson-McNutt, of East Norriton.

Alan received a wonderful education in the public schools of the Norristown Area School District.  He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bucknell University in 2008, earning a BA with honors in Theatre and Philosophy. After living for a year in New Orleans, he moved back to Philadelphia to pursue a career in theatre and education, working at theatres such as People's Light, Philadelphia Young Playwrights, Theatre Horizon, Luna, the Arden, Delaware Candlelight and Delaware Shakespeare.   He was a Teaching Artist for Dancing with the Students, and an adjunct professor (ballroom dance) at Drexel University.  Alan joined the National Liberty Museum and worked to create educational experiences centered around student leadership for justice and freedom, organizing and leading the Young Heroes Outreach Program in various schools around Philadelphia.

Alan was a lover of games, organizing get-togethers with friends from all circles of his life. He loved sharing his family and his home with his friends; game nights and pool parties at the Johnson-McNutt home in East Norriton or at the home he shared with Janine in Fishtown were chances to plan more fun and more connection between him and everyone he loved to be with. He was an artist and a scholar, a pianist and a singer, an actor and a teacher, a mischief-maker and a caring romantic partner. He listened to everyone perceptively and took great care to make sure each person was having the best experience for them individually, as well as with the group.

Survivors include his sister, Heather Rae Johnson-McNutt, of Sellersville; brother, Sean P. McNutt (Katie) of Willow Grove; maternal grandmother, Carolyn B. McNutt of Paoli; niece, Amy McNutt; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his soulmate, Janine Merolla.

A visitation will be held after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church (Kulpsville), 2211 Mainland Road, Harleysville, followed by the Memorial Service at 3:30 p.m.

A Memorial Celebration will be held Thursday at 6:00 pm on the Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park at 2000 Belmont Mansion Drive.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Alan's memory to the Young Heroes Outreach Program of The National Liberty Museum, 321 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Arrangements are by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
